Product Description The ASPCA National Shelter Outreach Program estimates there are 4000-6000 animal shelters in the United States. As the U.S. moves toward reducing the number of animals euthanized in its shelters, access to informed medical care and sound management procedures becomes increasingly critical. Veterinary schools have recently begun offering courses in shelter medicine. This premier text, dedicated to the field of shelter medicine, is a welcome addition to veterinary literature. This text will prove helpful to veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and other veterinary health professionals seeking job opportunities outside of the traditional veterinary practice, research, and industry venues. Shelter professionals will also want this reference text in their library. In addition to issues of epidemiology, Shelter Medicine for Veterinarians and Staff, also addresses issues like feral cat programs, basic sanitation, shelter design, cruelty investigations and euthanasia. This book is the first ever to involve principles of herd health management in companion animal species in shelters.

Shelter Medicine For Veterinarians and Staff September 3, 2008 Judy Lancaster (Kentucky, USA) Well-written and concise, this manual is an invaluable tool for any shelter organization to have as a reference. Shelter medicine is an area where there are not many publications available. This manual helps to fill that void in the literature with a wealth of information.
Great Resource July 18, 2008 M. Fooshee For the shelter veterianarian just starting out or those that have been practicing a long time. There are no current quality resource textbooks available for shelter veterinarians. It covers all the animal species most likely to be encountered in a shelter enviroment and all aspects of shelter medicine management. This book is a valuable addition to any shelter veterinarian's library.
Helpful Text, In-depth scientific information April 16, 2008 Amy Marks 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This textbook is certainly useful for people involved in animal shelters and rescue groups. It offers detailed, in-depth information about many aspects of animal sheltering. Don't expect cookbook formulas for the beginner though. Shelter medicine is a complex subject with no easy answers, and this is a text aimed at veterinarians and trained staff, so it contains some detailed scientific and medical information. It is a helpful and insightful resource.
